Pastor Joe Halbert shares from the heart

GatewayNaz is a place full of people who are committed to love. We are a church that seeks to share the love of Jesus, and you will see this to be evident each and every time you attend church here at Gateway. You can feel the love in this place called Gateway Nazarene. As you scroll through this web site do not just read the words. We want to encourage you to ask two questions. First, ask how I can get involved in the life of the church? Second, ask how can I help?

As you read, our hope is that you would be compelled to get involved and get active.

Gateway Church of the Nazarene is one of hundreds of Churches of the Nazarene around the world. The Church of the Nazarene is the largest denomination in the classical Wesleyan-Holiness tradition. The doctrine that distinguishes the Church of the Nazarene and other Wesleyan denominations from most other Christian denominations is that of entire sanctification. Nazarenes believe that God calls Christians to a life of holy living that is marked by an act of God, cleansing the heart from original sin and filling the individual with love for God and humankind. Gateway Church of the Nazarene began in 1989 in Temecula, as a church plant under the leadership of Rev. Kenn & Marsha Coil.

We were initially called Rancho California Neighborhood Church of the Nazarene. The next name transition was Temecula Valley Neighborhood Church of the Nazarene, and then became Gateway Church of the Nazarene when we met on Jefferson, at Adobe Plaza in Temecula.

Gateway's congregation pitched in to build our current building, and we moved to the Murrieta campus in May 2001.  The Coils were visionary, and had the gift of asking. Many miracles marked the time Gateway benefitted from their pastoral leadership. Pastor Coil continued on as Senior Pastor for another 7 years and retired from pastoral ministry in 2008 to focus on helping launch Lazarian World Homes. Marsha Coil still attends Gateway.

Pastor Tom led the charge in making sure Gateway was well-represented in the community. He formed a sign committee to replace the original vinyl banner with permanent signing on the property and added directional signage in the hallways. Not content to simply preach on Sundays, Tom could be found working in and around the church on most days of the week, calling on congregants, and was always ready to jump in when needed. Gateway was united in prayer during this first pastoral change and was strengthened as a body under his pastoral leadership.

In 2009, Pastor Bill Grigory and his wife, Theresa, were called from Oregon to serve as Lead Pastor & wife.

They came, believing it was God's plan for them to serve the Inland Valley of Southern California in Murrieta. Gateway celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2014!  Pastor Bill focused on Discipleship and encouraged everyone to grow in their spiritual walk. Known for his gifted singing voice and powerful sermons, Pastor Grigory led the congregation with a heart for missions and love for others.

After seven years of ministry at Gateway, in 2016 the Grigorys accepted an Assistant to the Field Strategy Coordinator position with South Asia Church of the Nazarene.

Pastor Kevin McDonald and his family served Gateway from January of 2017 to August 2018.

Pastor Kevin's passion was to reach the lost for Christ through church growth, church planting, and by empowering each of us to personally share our faith each day. In keeping with this passion, Gateway helped to re-establish the 29 Palms Church of the Nazarene, and Gateway now holds weekly services in Español. He called the people of Gateway to be consistent in their daily prayer life, in reading the scriptures, and sharing their faith. Many new believers came to know the Lord and were baptized during his ministry.

From August 2018 to March 2019, our interim pastor, Pastor Mel Rich, lead with his vision of making sure that each person, whether new to our church family or those who have been members for years, understood that they are loved and an important member of the body of Christ. He worked with the church board and Gateway’s staff to be sure that leadership kept in contact with the congregation during the transitional time between pastors.
